Diversity of scale insects (Hemiptera, Coccomorpha) in ten varieties of olive trees (Olea europaea L.) in Southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
WOLFF,VERA R.S.; EFROM,CAIO F.S.; SILVA,DANIELE C. DA; TONIETTO,ADILSON.
Abstract Olive production (Olea europaea L.) is a recent activity in Brazil and studies on the adaptability of olive trees varieties in the States are required. One of the problems that can hamper the development of olive trees is the incidence of pests, such as scale insects (Hemiptera, Coccomorpha). In this study, the associated scale insect species were found in ten varieties in an olive grove located at the Research Center of the Serra do Sudeste Region (30º33’15”S, 52º23’45”W) in Brazil. The surveys were carried out twice in each season (2013-2014). Six species of armored scale insect (Diaspididae) and two soft scales (Coccidae) were determined. Saissetia oleae (Coccidae) with 88.15% and Aspidiotus nerii (Diaspididae) with 5.85% occurred in all...

Salazar Santiago, Marco Antonio.

The study evaluated the influence of different levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), and flavonoids on the population of insects in Dimorphandra mollis Benth (Leguminosae) seedlings. The treatments associated with the highest level of attacks by Frankliniella schulzei (Trybon) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) were 600 mg dm-3 of P and 50 mg dm-3 of K. The highest level of attacks by Coccidae occurred for 300 of P and 150 and 250 mg dm-3 of K. The last two treatments also exhibited the highest level of attacks by Pseudococcidae. On the other hand, the control exhibited higher levels of flavonoids and a lower level of insect attacks. We observed a small positive effect of N levels on attack by F. schulzei. The levels of N, P and K negatively...

FORNAZIER,MAURÍCIO J.; MARTINS,DAVID S.; WILLINK,MARIA CRISTINA G. DE; PIROVANI,VICTOR D.; FERREIRA,PAULO S.F.; ZANUNCIO,JOSÉ C..
ABSTRACT Coffee is one of the most important Brazilian agricultural commodities exported, and Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo States are the main coffee producers. Scale insects are important coffee pests, and 73 species of Cerococcidae (3), Coccidae (18), Diaspididae (6), Eriococcidae (1), Ortheziidae (3), Pseudococcidae (21), Putoidae (2) and Rhizoecidae (19) have been associated with roots, branches, leaves, flowers and fruits of Arabica coffee in the Neotropics. Eight species were found associated with Arabica coffee in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo States in this study, and Coccidae was the most frequent family. Coccus alpinus, Cc. celatus, Cc. lizeri, Cc. viridis, and Saissetia coffeae (Coccidae) were found in both states; Alecanochiton marquesi,...

Uma espécie nova de Schwarzula da Amazônia (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponini) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Camargo,João M. F.; Pedro,Silvia R. M..
Schwarzula coccidophila sp. nov., a tiny Amazonian stingless bee, that attends scale insects (Cryptostigma Ferris, 1922, Coccidae) in its nest, is described. It is distinguished from Schwarzula timida (Silvestri, 1902), the only other species of the genus, mainly by the malar area longer than diameter of 3rd flagellomere, and the denser plumose pilosity. Additional records of S. timida is presented.
